Stumbled Upon: A. Lee Martinez

Once again I’ve been skulking the isles of the sci-fi section of the book store. It’s getting harder and harder to find books that I haven’t read there, but a couple of months ago I got lucky again. We love our science fiction, but we also love a little comedy and creativity here and there, so when we can find a good mix of both we jump on it. Out of sheer curiosity or maybe it was the bright yellow cover that got my attention, I scooped up a book called, ‘Monster’ by A. Lee Martinez. The first few pages grabbed me for the ride and through the book I was left chuckling at the story taking place in front of my eyes. After I finished reading ‘Monster’ I downloaded the audibook ‘Gil’s All Fright Diner’, then I started reading Divine Misfortune (which is so far my favorite). Needless to say I’ve gotten hooked on another author.

The good news here is that there are no series books, no leaving you hanging on for a year or more to find out what happens next, each story is its own little entity. Depending on what mood you’re in or what you like to read these may be a little awkward at first because they mix a little scifi with mythology and roll out with a believable it could have happened stories. For instance, religion and religious fanatics, they’re everywhere. But in Divine Misfortune people can search for Gods to worship like online dating. Imagine being in the office while your co-worker makes a sacrifice to his God at an alter to get the promotion you want. It gets pretty hairy and extremely creative. If you’re a fan of this site and our bad attempts at humor, you’ll probably get a kick out of A. Lee Martinez’s works. Well worth checking out. Here’s a list of his works and where you can stalk him online (you’ll be our Christmas gift to him).
